Chapter 35
âWEâRE GOING TO NEED another search warrant for this address,â Romero said to Copeland.
Billy reached the car. âWhatâve you got, Boss?â
âSomething my gut has been telling me was there the entire time. Take a look. This letter is addressed to the coach, but this address isnât where he resides.â Romero was still holding the envelope in the air like the winning lottery ticket.
âMore importantly,â Copeland cut in reaching for the find. âWhatâs inside?â
Romero ripped it from her grasp. âLetâs have a look see,â he said. He flipped the envelope over.
âAnother gift from above,â Copeland said. âItâs open.â
Romero slid the contents out. Billy was reading over his shoulder. Copeland was waiting for Romero to read it aloud. âDonât keep me in the dark. Share the wealth partner,â Copeland exclaimed.
Romeroâs eyes lifted from the page. âA gift indeed.â
âI found the girlâs iPhone on the path.â Billy interjected this out of the blue like a piano note off key.
The detectiveâs attention went from the envelope to the phone in Billyâs naked hand. âDammit!â Romero barked.
Billy was a deer in the headlights. âWhat?â
âYou touched it without gloves,â Romero barked.
Billy stared at the phone in his palm like it was a bomb about to explode. He just wanted to prove himself. Show that he wasnât just a kid, but a team member, detective worthy. âIâm sorry. I wasnât thinking. It was just lying there in the dirt. I didnât think it was connected.â
Romero pinned Billy with a stern stare. âDidnât you learn about the preservation of evidence, the use of gloves, and common sense in the academy?â He narrowed his eyes. âOr did you miss that class?â
âItâs okay,â Copeland said. She hated the expression on the kidâs face, the puppy dog eyes that had just drawn the scowl of his owner. She put a hand on his shoulder. âI wouldnât have thought twice about it either.â She had latex gloves on like Romero. They had not offered him any when they had arrived. Copeland reached in her pocket and pulled out a pair of rubber gloves. âIf you touch anything, put these on first.â
Billy gave a half smile and put the gloves on. He wasnât taking any chances. Romero slipped the phone inside a plastic evidence bag and sat it on the roof of the car. Romeroâs eyes went back to the page. Copelandâs eyes and Billyâs eyes were on Romero.
âAloud,â Copeland prodded. âRead it aloud.â
A deep sigh escaped Romero before he read. âYou know what you did and so do I. Soon everyone else will know. Do you hear it, Coach? The clang of the jail cell locking in the evil.â He refolded the paper. Slid it back inside the envelope and placed it inside an evidence bag. His mouth sagged downward, and his eyebrows furrowed. âItâs signed, Victim.â
âDo you think this has something to do with his kidnapping?â Billy asked.
âCanât rule it out,â Copeland answered. âSomeone is out for blood and may have hit pay dirt.â
Romero was feeling kind of low about his reprimand, so he gave Billy an olive branch.
